How to start writing

Writing · Hobbies

These were what I tried and worked for me. I’ll jump straight into it.

Note: This post turned out to be more opinionated than what I was expecting but still I hope you find some value in it.

Biting off more than you can chew is a very real problem when it comes to writing. Don’t pick a task so big that you know you will have trouble with it.

So no blog posts. No books. No essays even. Just a note that’s less than 100 words.

Constraints are your friend

This will also have the secondary effect of increasing the quality of your writing. Since your content is much smaller, it’s much more focused and you will find it easier to improve and perfect.

Reducing the scale is the key factor here. This reduces your expectations you have of yourself. Reduces it down to a level which you can achieve.

Reducing the scale of the task reduces your expectations of yourself

Now something really nice happens. When you finish that small piece of writing, you have managed to meet your expectations.

You have built yourself a positive feedback loop. You write something small, you manage to actually finish it, you publish it somewhere, you feel the satisfaction of completing a task.

This sense of satisfaction of starting to do something and actually finishing it is at the core of a writing journey or any habit for that matter.

It is what’s going to make you return to writing again and again.

Good luck on your writing journey!
